September 2026 Biopharma Hedge Fund Stock Picks: VRDN and 2 More

Sep 29
4 min read

For September 2026, our Hedge Fund Stock Picks highlight three biopharma companies with different clinical, commercial, and catalyst risks: Viridian Therapeutics (VRDN), a second pick with an emerging kidney-disease program, and a third with a pivotal eye-disease assessment ahead. Each of these is a biopharma-focused hedge fund consensus favorite, with 11 of 36 top biopharma hedge fund holders in VRDN, 9 in second pick, and 8 in third pick, which puts all of these above or near the top 10% of public smid-cap biopharma companies, an important validation of the quality of the company and its therapeutic assets.

VRDN has the lowest lead-franchise clinical risk of the three. Its thyroid eye disease (TED) drug Lumvoa is approved, and its follow-on program has reported positive Phase 3 results. The key question for VRDN is how well they execute the commercial launch of Lumvoa. The second pick sits in the middle, with an encouraging Phase 2 kidney-disease signal that still needs longer follow-up and pivotal confirmation. Third pick has the clearest near-term clinical binary: a Q4 2026 assessment of its Phase 3 trial.

VRDN: The Approved TED Franchise Pick

Viridian enters September with an approved product and a second TED program approaching a regulatory filing. Lumvoa (veligrotug) was approved for active and chronic TED in June 2026. Its earlier THRIVE and THRIVE-2 pivotal studies were positive, while VRDN-003 reported positive results in the REVEAL-1 and REVEAL-2 Phase 3 studies. Those results reduce the amount of new efficacy data needed to frame the lead TED story, but they do not settle launch execution or the next regulatory review.

The company has:

  • 11 BPIQ-tracked hedge fund holders, including Baker Bros., Fairmount, Kynam, and Paradigm. VRDN remains in BPIQ's Top 15 portfolio; the September refresh removed it from RunUp.

  • $981.5 million in cash as of BPIQ's June 30 finance update, against a reported quarterly burn of $105.3 million. BPIQ's runway screen extends to October 2028, subject to future launch and pipeline spending.

  • A near-term commercial test as Lumvoa's launch develops, with VRDN’s Q3 corporate update in late October or November as the likely next launch update.

  • A follow-on regulatory path, with the VRDN-003 biologics license application (BLA) submission guided to Q1 2027. Separate VRDN-008 Phase 1 healthy-volunteer data are expected in H2 2026.

The main risk has shifted toward adoption and launch execution. Amgen's approved Tepezza is an established TED competitor, and a subcutaneous version reported positive Phase 3 results. Roche's satralizumab uses a different mechanism and has a TED FDA decision expected October 15, 2026. These developments make commercial differentiation as important to watch as the VRDN-003 filing. And this commercial differentiation will rely on less treatment burden (5 shorter infusions (Lumvoa) vs 8 long infusions (Tepezza), 5 shorter infusions (Lumvoa) vs. 3 at-home injections (VRDN-003), an approval for both active and chronic TED, and improvement in diplopia.

For investors, VRDN offers an approved-product base and lower lead-franchise clinical risk than the other two picks, alongside meaningful commercial and regulatory questions.

Final Takeaway

The September picks span three different questions.

  • VRDN: An approved TED therapy and positive follow-on pivotal results leave launch execution and the next filing as the main near-term questions.

  • The second company's kidney-disease signal still needs follow-up and pivotal confirmation.

  • The third faces a high-stakes Phase 3 assessment that could lead to a longer wait if the trial continues.

All three have meaningful hedge fund sponsorship, but each requires a different kind of diligence. Compare BPIQ plans for the full reports.
